Jes Winter
In life there are artists we choose to remember and those we can never forget. Jes Winter’s hauntingly beautiful voice is one of those that contain recognizably pure talent and her lyrical songs evoke emotions we didn’t know we had.
“A storyteller that captivates,” would be an accurate depiction. But you would never see it coming. The Omaha, Nebraska girl embodies a completely down to earth, laid back attitude, almost casually unaware of her vast talents.
Her admitted love of ‘Adele’ and her admiration for ‘Florence and the Machine,’ would seem fitting. If you are fortunate enough to be spellbound by one of her songs, you could easily imagine her walking on stage with these artists as an equal billing.
Jes passion for great music started at a young age. She admitted, (in a recent interview), to plugging headphones into the boom box in her room so she could listen to the radio, despite her strict upbringing. One of her first musical influences and CD purchase was the gut wrenching, emotionally raw Alanis Morrisette. Perhaps Ms. Morrisette had no idea that she, along with a few key others, would influence Jes Winter to write the songs she would write but you can feel the compelling nature of Jes’ own emotion and the inter woven life experiences.
“I’m always listening to lyrics.” Jes stated. “It’s the driving force. It’s composition.”
One of the driving forces behind Jes in her own writing was her desire to perform at the young age of 18. Armed with a guitar, she did so for a year and then fronted a band for over three years. She wrote all her own music, although she gives credit to musical influences. “I try to take the best aspects of all music around me.” With this in mind she attempted, (when asked), to narrow her genre down to “indie/pop/rock.” But of course, she is broader in her spectrum and can cross over if need be. Some talents have no boundaries.
Jes sweet nature disarms you. Her voice will mesmerize you and her compassion for others may surprise you. “I just want to reach people where they are at, not make them come to where I am. Love is our full purpose.”
Jes’ grounded demeanor comes from a supportive family, despite the ups and downs of typical family life that included divorce, a few siblings and quite a few half siblings. “They are the trunk of my tree.” She said affectionately.
Now relocating to Nashville TN to pursue her music career fully, Jes Winter has embraced her calling and her vision. “My music is from personal experiences and fundamentally comes from a good place.” Understated in her description of herself and her abilities, Jes’ musical genius not only comes from a “good” place fundamentally, but a brilliant one.
